Music for life

The Orchestra's Music for Life programme takes music and music-making experiences beyond the concert stage and into the local community, offering high quality, relevant musical experiences for all. The Orchestra works closely with schools and colleges in the area and in collaboration with people of all ages within the wider community, enabling people to participate in, and enjoy music making through creative projects.

During the 2008-2009 season, the Orchestra worked in partnership with SNAP (a facility offering opportunities to adults with learning difficulties) and students from Leon School and Sports College to create two new collections of artwork, inspired by 'Pictures at an Exhibition'. In turn, the newly created pieces of art became the inspiration for two new compositions which were performed in the foyer at Milton Keynes Theatre prior to the January concert in 2009.

Later in the season, musicians from the Milton Keynes City Orchestra toured venues in West Bletchley, Wolverton, Stony Stratford and Buckingham to provide performances of our 'Creatures' concert to local children and their families. These performances were supported by a series of workshops working with music animateur Cathy Kelly and musicians from the Orchestra.

Funding from Youth Music enabled a partnership project with the Rowans Family Centre working with the Wolverton Multi-Cultural toddler group, the Asian Womens Group and the Rowans Day Nursery. This project offered training and support to group members to enable them to become confident and independent in early years music making activity.

In January 2010, the Orchestra toured libraries in and around Milton Keynes with 'Song and Dance', an interactive music performance for children and families. Lead by animateur Cathy Kelly and members of the Orchestra, the tour was well received and offered a first experience of orchestral music for young audience members.
