The concert combines works by some of the greatest masters of musical writing. Mozart's genius is widely celebrated - here his Flute Concerto No. 2 performed by Ileana Ruhermann, highlights the charm of the flute which sings over the orchestra. Beethoven's writing demonstrates musical developments from Mozart's classical formalism., to the later romantic writers. Symphony No.2 looks towards the future, betraying the anguished personal motivation at the time when he faced deafness. The symphony is bright and possitive - determined and triumphant. Wagner is the great Romantic - the Seigfried Idyll is regarded as one of his greatest works, for its intimacy and emotion.
