"Berlioz adored Shakespeare and wrote many peices inspired by his characters. I think his Lear definitely has a flavour of bombastic Falstaff as well as the grandeur of the King and, although Orphelia is fleetingly here too, any moments of weakness and self-doubt are cast aside by the wonderful tunes and vigorous energy of Berlioz' music." - Sian Edwards.
Tchaikovsky himself described his Symphony No. 4 as programme music, music with a narrative, depicting the subject of Fate and reflecting on Beethoven's now immortal fithth symphony. However, Piano Concerto No. 5 was nicknamed "Emperor" by a publisher after Beethoven's death.
