  Tommy is Best of British

Thomas Carroll gave a deeply moving performance of one of the most popular works ever written by a British Composer, Elgar's Cello Concerto.  This young cellist was making his debut appearance in Milton Keynes but the response of the enthusiastic audience should mean that it will not be his last.  His approach to the concerto's nostalgia was thoughtful and original, while his fluent technique mastered the notoriously difficult second and last movements.  Carroll also brought to the Milton Keynes Theatre a recent work, 'Eternal Memory', by the most popular of contemporary British composers, John Tavener.  This deeply philosophical work was given a sonorous performance that explored the many colours that Carroll's 'cello possesses.  Hilary Davan Wetton brought this very British concert to a close with a fine performance of Vaughan Williams' fifth symphony, another work with a deeply felt philosophy, written during the darkest days of the Second World War.  The Milton Keynes City Orchestra once more demonstrated how lucky the Theatre is to have such a high quality professional orchestra in residence.
