Thomas Carroll - Click for larger photoThomas Carroll was selected for representation by YCAT in June 2000. In January 2001 he was chosen for representation by Young Concert Artists, Inc. in New York. YCA provide management throughout the USA along with debut concerts in New York, Boston and Washington DC. Over the last year Thomas has also won top prizes at the Johannes Brahms (Austria), Munich (Germany) and Leonard Rose (USA) International Competitions.

Born in Swansea in 1975, Thomas Carroll studied with Melissa Phelps at the Yehudi Menuhin School and from 1994 until 2000 with Heinrich Schiff in Austria. 

During his studies Thomas has won numerous prizes and awards. In 1992 he won the String Section of the BBC Young Musicians’ Competition. He immediately went on to win the Bronze Medal in the Shell/LSO Competition with a performance of Dvorák’s Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican. In 1999 he won the String Section of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition, the Rostropovich Prize in the Adam International Competition in New Zealand and the Dominick Prize in the Stuttgart International Cello Competition. 

As a concerto soloist Thomas has appeared with the London Mozart Players, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, European Community Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of the Bayerische Rundfunk, Munich Chamber Orchestra, City of London Chamber Orchestra and the Jungen Munchener Sinfonia. Over the last year he has performed Schoenberg’s Concerto with the Junge Philharmonie conducted by Arturo Tamayo, Shostakovich’s Concerto No.1 with ViVA, the Orchestra of the East Midlands and given several performances of the Elgar and Finzi Concertos. Future plans include a performance of the Lutoslawski Concerto with Heinrich Schiff in Graz and the world premiere of a concerto by Joe Duddell, especially commissioned for Thomas by ViVA, the Orchestra of the East Midlands as part of their 21st Birthday celebrations. 

During the 2000/01 season Thomas gave recitals at Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Bridgewater Hall and throughout the UK as part of the Tillett Trust Young Artists Platform series. Abroad he has given concerts at the Mecklenburg Festival in Germany and toured South America under the auspices of the British Council. He has performed extensively at international music festivals including Gstaad Menuhin Festival, Kronberg Festival and the International Musicians’ Seminar at Prussia Cove, appearing with Gidon Kremer, Eugene Istomin, Pierre Amoyal, Lord Menuhin and Christian Tetzlaff, among others. As a chamber musician he has given recitals with Ivry Gitlis at the Wigmore Hall, performed Schubert’s String Quintet with the Endellion Quartet and with Steven Isserlis at the City of London Festival. This summer he performs the Schubert Quintet with the Belcea Quartet at the Aldeburgh and Edinburgh International Festivals.
