Florian Uhlig - Piano

Only recently Florian Uhlig was awarded, for the third time in a row, the critics’ prize by the Munich Tageszeitung for outstanding contributions to the arts.  He “possesses a fabulous sense of sound.  With stunning facility he throws himself into breakneck tempi, and, above all, moulds every phrase, not skating over anything - his interpretations are almost too much in love with every detail, sometimes stubbornly individual, but always exciting and interesting. A true magician in sound!” (Münchner Tageszeitung)

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, Florian Uhlig gave his first solo recital at the age of twelve at the opening of the first International Schubert Piano Competition in Dortmund. He studied with such eminent pedagogues as Peter Feuchtwanger, Detlef Kraus, as well as Igor Oistrakh (chamber music).  He continued his studies in London where he graduated from the Royal College of Music with First Class Honours and from the Royal Academy of Music with Distinction, also taking the prestigious Premier Prix (DipRAM).

Florian Uhlig, now aged 26, has won numerous prizes, including the First Prize of the piano section in the "Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists' Competition". In 1999 he was presented with three coveted honours: a European Cultural Prize, conferred by the "Fondation Européenne de la Culture", the Queen Elizabeth Rose Bowl and the Stephen Arlen Memorial Award, bestowed by the English National Opera.

As a soloist Florian Uhlig has performed extensively throughout Europe, America and Asia. He made his orchestral debut in London with the première of the Clara Schumann Piano Concerto at the Barbican in 1997.  Since then his engagements have included concerts in Brussels, Cape Town (Baxter Concert Hall), Istanbul, Johannesburg (Linder Auditorium), London (Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre), Munich (Herkulessaal, Prinzregententheater), New York (Steinway Hall), Paris, Prague (Rudolfinum), Rotterdam (Concertgebouw de Doelen), Seoul, Venice and Vienna (Musikverein). His festival appearances include Schleswig-Holstein, Beethovenfest Bonn, Schloßfestspiele Ludwigsburg, Kammermusiktage Schloß Elmau and Strausstage Garmisch.  In addition to his work as a soloist Florian Uhlig is a much sought-after chamber music partner and lieder accompanist.  He was the last partner of the legendary German baritone Hermann Prey and is presently collaborating with Pamela Coburn, Franz Hawlata, Ingolf Turban, Willard White and the wind soloists of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, amongst others.

Florian Uhlig is giving masterclasses and lectures at the Royal College of Music, London, the Kwangju Art University, South Korea, the Conservatoire de Neuchâtel, Switzerland, as well as at the Universities of Johannesburg and Cape Town. His recent CD Venezia (Black Box BBM1054) was greeted enthusiastically by the press.
