Alexandra Sherman

Alexandra Sherman - Click for larger pictureBorn in St. Petersburg, Russia, Alexandra studied piano in Jerusalem and singing in Melbourne, Australia. An Honours graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts (University of Melbourne), Alexandra has been the recipient of several awards and scholarships, notably the Queen's Trust for Young Australians Award, the University of Melbourne Clarke Scholarship and  The Australian Singing Competition incorporating the Marianne Mathy and  Joan Sutherland Awards, as well as the Vocal Category of the Symphony  Australia Young Performer of the Year Award. These scholarships have enabled Alexandra to study at the Royal College of Music, London, where she is currently completing her post-graduate operatic training.

Alexandra performs regularly as soloist in oratorio and recital in both Australia and the UK. In Australia concert highlights have included Mahler's 2nd Symphony and Songs of a Wayfarer with both the Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, Berlioz' Les Nuits d'Ete, Elgar's Sea Pictures, Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Pergolesi's Stabat Mater which she has recorded. In the UK Alexandra performs mostly in oratorio with such orchestras as the London Mozart Players and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with works such as Bach's St. John and St. Matthew Passions, Mendelssohn's Elijah and Handel's Messiah. She has also appeared in several concerts at St. John's Smith Square, London, most recently with Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music in Bach's Magnificat following a European tour.

Alexandra has also appeared in the Musica nel Chiostro Festival in Batignano, Italy, and in the LRSO production of Handel's Flavio and Muzio Scevola for the London Handel Festival. Recently she sung de Falla's El Amor Brujo and Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky in Spain.

In summer 2001 Alexandra partook in the Russian master-classes with Sergei Leiferkus at the Britten-Pears School. She will return in 2002 to sing the role of Dryade in the schools' production of Ariadne auf Naxos, and will record the Messiah in Sydney for the ABC. Engagements in 2003 include the role of Third Lady in Magic Flute at Opera North.
