Finlandia - Sibelius
Piano Concerto no.2 - Shostakovich
New World Symphony - Dvorak
"Here is a programme which will show what a virtuso ensemble the Milton Keynes City Orchestra has become. From the inspiring music of Sibelius at his most patriotic, via the energetic wit of Shostakovich (this concerto was a birthday present to his son Maxim) we arrive at Dvorak's last symphony. This extraordinary work is a most powerful expression of home-sickness and its famous ending, which vanishes like a dream, is unforgettable in live performance. All three composers had a most acute sense of their national heritage, yet all three have international appeal. All three also deploy the modern symphony orchestra to tremendous effect. A good recipe for a memorable evening!
It will be a great pleasure to return to my favourite orchestra. Do come and share that pleasure with me."
