"Sibelius' 5th Symphony will always have a special place in my heart, not only because I love the music but becauseit was this piece that I won the first Leeds Conductors' Competition. I had prepared it with my teacher in Russia who had never heard it before, even though we were only a few hours from Finland in the former Leningrad. Perhaps that brought it home to me as forcefully as anything how closed the Soviet Union really was, and how effective the iron curtain. Imagine my relief when, after a period of hessitation, my teacher said that he thought the music was not really bad!"
