The Orchestra's Music for Life programme delivers projects within the local community, working with schools, family centres, colleges all within the local community.
Recently the Orchestra have been working in partnership with the Rowans Family Centre delivering an early years music training project working with the Wolverton Multi Cultural Toddler Group. This was an exciting opportunity to share music making in nurserys.
Milton Keynes City Orchestra worked in parnership with SNAP (a facility offering opportunities to adults with physical and learning difficulties) and students from Leon School and Sport College to create two new collections of artwork, inspired by 'Pictures at an Exhibition'. In turn, the newly created pieces of art became the inspiration for two new compositions which were performed in the Foyer at Milton Keynes Theatre prior to our January concert.
Another project involved working in partnership with Penwith School as part of the Creative Partnerships Enquiry School programme. The project explored the enquiry question “How can we develop the Reception children’s experience and skills in musical composition so that we can maximise their learning in a musical area in an outdoor environment?”
The Orchestra have worked over a number of years with composer Ian Tipping who has been commissioned to write various suites of music for small ensemble, working on a chosen theme, to enable easy access and appeal for children and families. The first of these commissions toured in 2008 with a suite of music entitled 'Birds'. This was followed by 'Creatures' in 2009 and 'Song and Dance' in 2010. Each of these suites of music have toured libraries in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas, local Family Centres, schools and even groups of elderly residents in sheltered housing schemes in Milton Keynes. The tours have also gone further afield, with performances in Bedfordshire, Luton and Northamptonshire
